Nick Thorpe, travel writer and journalist, was guest speaker in Forfar library last Thursday evening.

In conjunction with Angus Libraries Live Literature events entitled ‘Itchy Feet – Meet the Author’, Nick entertained his audience telling of his risk taking voyages around Scotland by hitching rides on various seafaring vessels and also from Chile to Easter Island. His books are available to borrow from your local library.

Thanks to everyone who took part in Forfar and Kirriemuir libraries’ fun competitions over the ‘tattie holidays’.

Over 1,000 books were issued to junior readers in the two weeks of the holidays.

Lots of children could be found searching for tatties hidden throughout the junior sections of both libraries. Congratulations to Kirriemuir’s winner, Caitlyn Connell and Forfar’s winner Haydn Rioch who both received books to read in the dark autumn nights.

Clara Coleman from Forfar won the special prize for finding a ‘Golden Tattie’.

Forfar children are looking forward to their annual ‘Night in the Library’ on Friday. So don’t be alarmed if you are passing the door and see spooks with torches after hours.

It was National Baking Week between October 15 and 21 and if you joined Kirriemuir staff the morning after watching The Great British Bake-off you’d have been welcome to add your weight to the debate over who they thought was worthy of the trophy.

If, like them, you want to get your hands into some flour, butter and eggs there is quite a range of baking books in stock throughout Angus, including some of Mary Berry’s and Paul Hollywood’s recipe books.

There are recipes for beginners and experts alike - go on, you know you want to!

Aurora read Kirriemuir Reading Group’s book for October - The Confidant by Helene Gremillon and thoroughly enjoyed it.

It takes place at the beginning of France’s involvement in the Second World War and takes you on a journey through past lives from innocent friendships to disturbing entanglements. Everything is revealed bit by bit in anonymous letters to the grieving Camille. Aurora wonders what everyone else thought about it.
