A TEN-YEAR-OLD from Letham travelled to Corbridge to attend the Northumberland Show, to assist his uncle and aunt (Alasdair & Janeen Smith (nee Cochrane), formerly from Brechin to show in the Holstein classes.

Ewan had a very successful day on his first ever outing in the show ring.

He took first place in the junior calf class with Carkin Special Michelle, then they went on to win calf championship over the intermediate and senior calf winners, receiving the Hexham Courant Challenge Cup.

The judge was so impressed with the calf. The only thing he could find wrong was that Ewan didn’t own it himself!

Then came the showmanship classes, in which the judge looks for a showman that can be in complete control of the calf.

Ewan again took first place in the junior showmanship class and into the championship for the showmanship. The judge awarded him with an honorary mention due to him being in full control of the calf and having shown it to its full potential.

Uncle Alasdair then went on to take the Holstein reserve champion, with Carkin Jordan Mia placed first in the senior cow in milk having had four calvings.

Ewan, who is pictured with his champion calf at Northumberland Show on Bank Holiday Monday, is looking forward to many more years of showing ahead.
