Diamond day for Kirriemuir couple

THERE were diamond wedding celebrations for a Kirriemuir couple on Wednesday (today).

George and Catherine Howe, of Knowehead, Kirriemuir, enjoyed a visit from the new Provost of Angus, Helen Oswald, as they marked 60 years of marriage, having tied the knot in Montrose on May 30, 1952.

George, who was brought up in Glen Prosen, spent his early years as a shepherd at The Spott.

He and his wife Catherine, who hails from Montrose, then settled in the Kilry area, both working at the Fornethy Residential School for girls, run at the time by Glasgow Corporation.

George was gardner/handyman and Catherine was involved in domestic duties.

The couple retired to Kirriemuir in 1990.

They had five of a family, Marian, Fiona, the late Colin, John and Michael, and also have three grandchildren and two great-grand children.
