Delson contract

DELSON Contracts Ltd. of Forfar has been awarded the £280,000 Angus Council contract to design and construct a new salt storage facility to protect the county’s valuable winter salt stocks from the elements.

It will be built at the Kirriemuir Road depot in Forfar and will have a minimum 15-year lifespan.

When complete it will house around 6,000 tonnes of salt.

The winter weather has forced the region’s three councils - Angus, Dundee and Perth and Kinross - to increase their salt order and around 27,000 tonnes has already been stockpiled.

This new facility will protect Angus salt stocks from the elements and generate savings of around £40,000 per year.

Angus infrastructure services depute convener David Fairweather welcomed the news.

He said: “It’s fantastic news this is going ahead. This facility - which will house salt and ensure it isn’t lost to the elements - will give best value for the whole of Angus.”

An Angus Council spokeswoman added the facility would help ensure there was enough salt for the county’s pavements and roads this winter.

She added: “Preliminary work on the design and planning application has now started and the construction, which will take around five to six weeks, is expected to take place this autumn.”
