Dance Academy will be a Kirrie first

A HUSBAND and wife team of professional dancers is preparing to share their expertise with the community by opening a new dance academy.

Peter and Laura Watson moved to Kirriemuir with their two young children over a year ago and with the wish to give something back to the town, the idea of The Laura Watson Dance Academy was born.

With them they are bringing a wealth of experience to share, as Peter explains: “My wife and I have had careers as professional dancers, in my case this was as a ballet dancer trained at The Royal Ballet School.

“I danced with The Royal Flemish ballet and the Scottish Ballet as a soloist for over 10 years. Highlights of this career saw me dancing with Rudolf Nureyev in Paris and performing at The Royal Variety Performance at The Palladium in London.

“I subsequently ran my own dance company, was dance artist in The Scottish Borders for three years and started the dance training at Dundee College. I lectured and directed the course which has grown to become the place to train in dance in Scotland.

“Laura trained at one of the best conservatoires of dance in Europe - ‘The Northern School of Contemporary Dance’, has a degree in dance and has danced with Verve dance company.

“She has many years of experience as a dance lecturer at The Space, Dundee College.”

Peter says that interest has been high for the classes, which will be held at Northmuir Hall, with many keen to get involved in ballet. He added: “The first day, on Saturday, May 5, will be a taster day with a free class for everyone who has signed up. This is a completely new thing for the town as nowhere else in Kirriemuir provides ballet lessons.

“At the moment it is very much for the kids from about three to six years old but we expect it will grow in the years to come.”
