Constituency issues at a.g.m.

Angus North and Mearns SNP Constituency Association held its AGM recently in the Caledonian Hotel, Brechin.

Convener Bill Duff presented his very positive annual report highlighting the successful election of Nigel Don as constituency MSP in May and the launch of the Independence Road Show in the Northern Hotel, Brechin by MP Angus Robertson in November.

Bill also reported that some constituency members had attended the swearing in of MSPs at the Scottish Parliament and others more recently visited the Scottish Parliament for First Minister’s Questions.

In addition to reports from other office bearers, members had reports from Nigel Don MSP, Mike Weir MP and Ian Hudghton MEP.

Nigel updated members on current issues in the constituency and successes in the Scottish Parliament. Mike contrasted the positive SNP budget with threats to privatise the NHS and the police south of the border. Ian highlighted the increasing interest in Europe in Scottish Independence.

Overseen by guest speaker Graeme Dey MSP the following Office Bearers were elected: Convener Bill Duff (Montrose Branch), Vice Convener Jim Houston (Brechin Branch), Organiser Lynne Devine (Forfar Branch), Treasurer Karen Box (Stonehaven & Mearns Branch) and Secretary Mark McDonald (Montrose Branch). Graeme’s theme was on the role of the media in shaping the referendum debate.

He commented: “I was delighted to be asked to speak at the Angus North and Mearns Constituency Association AGM especially given my longstanding connection with the Montrose, Brechin and Forfar areas. I am pleased to see how well the new constituency is working together.”

Following a lively question and answer session, the meeting closed with all members looking forward to the SNP Spring Conference in Glasgow on March 10 and 11 in great heart for the local election campaigns.
