The Asda store in Forfar has been continuing its support of the town and the surrounding area through the Asda Community Life Initiative.

During 2013, 18 local community groups have benefited from the ‘Chosen By You…..Given By Us’ vote which asks customers to nominate and then vote over a two month period for the group they wish Asda to support.

Customers collect a token at the checkout and cast their vote in the foyer.

Over the two month period staff and customers can watch the votes rise until the votes are counted and the winner is announced. The winning group receives £200 and the two runners up receive £50 each, so no-one loses out.

Part of the Community Life initiative is to open up the store’s meeting spaces to the public for free.

The ‘community centre’ is open to not-for-profit organisations that require meeting space to improve the quality of people’s lives locally.

In 2013 Asda Forfar was used as a ‘community centre’ 127 times. This included monthly MSP surgeries and tenants’ association meetings, among other things.

Community Life is not just about Asda working with but within the local community.

Community Life Champion, Andrea Logan, spent over 300 hours out and about in Angus during 2013.

She said: “Working out with the store is a really important part of my role.

“Whether it’s my weekly visits to help out at the Strathmore Hospice or just to drop off a raffle prize to a local group it all helps me to make new contacts who may need our support at some point in the future.”

Store Manager, Robert Hallyburton added: “I and the colleagues at Asda Forfar are proud to be a part of Community Life and delighted that over £11,200 was raised for local charities in our store over the past year. We hope that this and everything else that we are doing helps to make Forfar the best it can be.”
