A RALLYING call has gone out to supporters to gather at Arbroath Abbey this Saturday to commemorate “the patriotic heroes of the past”.
Mr Jim McGugan of Letham, the co-ordinator of the 1320 Memorial Gathering said: “At 13.20 hours on Saturday, April 6, Scottish patriots will assemble on the Abbey Green at Arbroath Abbey to commemorate the patriotic heroes of the past.
“There will be a short address. This will say that the number assembled on the day is small in comparison to the vast host of Scottish patriot with which the commemoration is surrounded. The names of past heroes will be read out.”
The list begins with Galgach, who led a Pictish force to defend this land from invasion by the Romans at Mons Graupius. The heroes of the 14th century who penned the Letter of Arbroath will also be mentioned along with present day heroes including the Reverend Douglas Emslie MM, the first SNP candidate in Forfar in the by-election of Montrose Burghs in the thirties, and Arthur Donaldson and his wife Vi, who came from Forfar.
Arthur led the SNP in its formative years.
