Cemetery vandalism condemned

Vandals who caused more than £1,000 worth of damage at Newmonthill Cemetery have been condemned.

Some time between Friday, May 1 and 7.30 a.m. on Tuesday, their spree included toppling four headstones; punching two holes in the machine shed roof, probably by someone walking over it, some of the stones on the wall alongside the machine shed have also been toppled.

An Angus Council spokeswoman said the local authority is looking at costs of all the repairs, but the damage to the roof alone will cost £1,000 to fix.

She said: “This is an appalling act of vandalism which we will be repairing as soon as possible.

We will also be making every effort to be in touch with the families affected by this mindless vandalism.

“We have reported this to the police and we would urge anyone with any information to get in touch with the Police by calling 101.”
