The new ‘People’s Friend’ group of Contact the Elderly, which covers the Forfar and Kirriemuir area, is urgently seeking volunteer drivers.

The group was launched at Glamis in September and volunteers have come forward from Forfar but not unfortunately from Kirriemuir.

As most of the elderly members who have joined come from Kirriemuir, and there is a waiting list, this is proving to be a major problem.

Drivers take a couple of elderly people to a host’s house and join them for afternoon tea, arriving at 2pm and leaving at 4pm. The group meets on the second Sunday of the month and is for over 75’s who do not get out much and have few visitors.

Ideally drivers would be available each month but as people can have other commitments we would be happy to have a pool of drivers.

If anyone is interested in volunteering with the charity they will find it very enjoyable. Having afternoon tea in someone’s home, making new friends and chatting to our lovely old people is hardly arduous but makes a tremendous difference to all concerned.

Meanwhile, Contact the Elderly is launching an on-line Christmas Advent calendar to increase awareness of the organization’s vital work in offering a lifeline of friendship to the elderly and to help recruit new volunteers.

Each day members of the public will be able to view the calendar and listen to audio stories from the charity’s older guests who attend the tea parties. Included in the calendar are Mrs. Little of Kirriemuir and Mrs. Alexander of Brechin.

The calendar can be found on www.contact-the-elderly.org.uk/christmas-countdown
