THE latest recipient of the monthly £250 Forfar Roof Truss Company sponsorship award is the autism base at Forfar Academy.

The base is a secondary provision within the Angus area which caters for pupils with severe and complex autism.

Explained teacher Julie Love, in her Forfar Roof Truss application: “Autism is a life-long condition which affects a person’s ability to interact with the world around them.

“Providing lots of experiental and practical tasks, such as gardening, cooking and social activities is valuable as it allows autistic pupils to understand their environment in a more meaningful way and provides them with practical lfe skills for adulthood.”

Julie goes on to explain that the local authority is laying a rubber surface inn the playground, which will make it a safe useable space for these pupils.

“At the moment we are fund-raising to buy equipment for this area.

“One of the main pieces of equipmetn will a sturdy outside tablet that can seat up to ten people, plus a space for at least one wheelchair.

“If we can buy this it would serve to meet the needs of all the youngsters who will attend the base over the next five years and more.

“Having this piece of equipment would increase the pupils’ access to the outside area and mean that we could use it all year round as an outside classroom for a variety of teaching and social activities.”

The Forfar Roof Truss Company Award scheme is now in its ninth year, with individuals and groups benefiting to the tune of several thousands of pounds during that time.
