Angus Council sports development team is calling on the local Angus community to turn out in force and celebrate the sporting stars of Angus as they step into the spotlight for their annual sports awards ceremony.
The Angus Sports Awards 2011 in association with Angus Ahead is taking place at the Reid Hall, Forfar on Tuesday, March 6 at 6.15pm for 7 pm and tickets go on general sale from Monday, February 20.
Angus Council sports development is honouring the commitment, achievements and dedication of individuals and teams involved in sport across Angus during 2011. The ceremony is presented by Angus Council sports development team in association Angus Ahead, the areas marketing campaign set up to fly the flag for the county at home and abroad.
The roll of honour for the Angus Sports Awards 2011 is as follows:
Sports Personality of the Year, sponsored by Auchterhouse Country Sports - This award aims to recognise the achievements of a top sports performer in 2011. This includes performers that compete on paralympic and elite levels: Claire Pirie, Speed Skating; Greg Drummond, Curling; Mark Shepherd, Swimming.
Young Sports Personality of the Year, sponsored by Radio Tay – Cash for Kids - This award aims to recognise the achievements of a top junior sports performer in 2011: Duncan Menzies, Curling; Madeline Owen, Running; Laura Black, Netball; Nicola Duncan, Gymnastics;

Coach of the Year, sponsored by CoachingAngus - This award aims to recognise the achievements and commitment of a sports coach in 2011. Sports Personality of the Year Award for People with a Disability, sponsored by Angus Disability Sport in partnership with National Oilwell Varco - This award aims to recognise an individual with a physical, sensory or learning disability who took part in sporting activities in 2011. This award will only consider nominations for people below paralympic and elite levels: Daniel Brownlee, Swimming; Michael Hands, Swimming; Jamie Black, Ten Pin Bowling; Martin Cassidy, Bowling; Ian Bradford, Table Tennis; Neil Grant, Football; Paul Radunski, Football; Martin Ross, Football.
Service to Sport Award, sponsored by Angus College - This award aims to recognise someone who has made an outstanding contribution to sport in Angus as administrator, official, coach or helper over a number of years: Laura Smith, Special Olympics; Yvonne Robertson, Rugby; Neil Valentine, Swimming; Jill Donald, Curling; Andy Robbie, Football; Caroline Campbell, Rugby.
The Angus Sports Awards 2011 selection panel will meet to finalise short lists and winners for each award category and these will be announced at the awards ceremony.
All nominees and nominators have been invited to attend the ceremony that is hosted and broadcast by Radio Tay.
Event organisers are delighted to announce that they have secured a special guest speaker for this year’s awards in home grown Modern Pentathlete, Louise Helyer and guests will also enjoy a three-course meal following the presentations.
