The Aboukir restaurant and bar, Carnoustie, has been named as the overall winner of the Best Bar None scheme in Angus for 2011.
The announcement was made at the Best Bar None Angus Awards 2011 ceremony in Carnoustie last Thursday 24 November.
The Best Bar None in Angus is now in its fifth year.
Owners of the Aboukir were presented with a specially designed bespoke award.
The Wave 102 Listeners Vote, a new category, was awarded to DeVitos Nightclub in Arbroath. Other awards were: as follows:-Community Engagement (new category, the Craw’s Nest, Carnoustie; Best Newcomer (new category), Westport Bar, Arbroath .
Forbes of Kingennie, received The Disability Awareness and Accessibility category award for the third time.
Robert Peat, chair of the Angus Alcohol and Drugs Partnership and Eileen McArthur of the Focus on Alcohol Angus presented the awards and thanked sponsors Diageo, Thorntons Solicitors, Astute and Wave 102.
Robert Peat said: “I am very pleased to welcome representatives here from our licensed businesses throughout Angus, and I congratulate everyone who has worked so hard to achieve the high standards required for these awards.”
He added: “ Initiatives such as the Angus Designated Drivers scheme and the Alcohol Awareness week campaign are all very important in encouraging the safe and sensible consumption of alcohol. The support of managers and staff in our bars and restaurants is crucial in promoting these messages.”
Chief Superintendant Kevin Lynch of Tayside Police, who is chairman of the Focus on Alcohol Angus Board also praised those who had received awards.
He said: “I too congratulate all the participants and winners in providing a reassurance to the local community that they are committed to operating their respective premises responsibly and to a high standard.
“All participants and category winners are to be commended for their support in promoting social and community responsibility through safe and sensible sale and consumption of alcohol throughout Angus.
He added: “I am particularly encouraged by the participation of premises in Carnoustie which feature prominently in this year’s list of winners, and for the Westport Bar, Arbroath, which has only been operating for just over a year and which clearly impressed the mystery shopping judges.
Forbes of Kingennie are also to be commended for their continued support in being awarded the Disability Awareness and Accessibility Award, for the third time.”
