A fun, fit summer

NHS Tayside’s Paediatric Overweight Service Tayside (POST) is encouraging families to have fun and get fit this summer.

The POST team is endorsing messages from the new ‘Start Active, Stay Active’ document produced by the UK’s four countries chief medical officers. The aim of the new initiative is to encourage adults, young people and children of all ages to take regular physical activity.

In particular the new guidelines recommend that even children under five years of age should have less sitting time and be encouraged to be physically active for at least three hours a day.

It is proven that regular physical activity in everyone’s daily life has many health benefits, which includes contributing to a healthy weight, bone health and improving cardiovascular health and well as improved quality of life.

So with the lighter summer nights and better weather, this is a great time to ditch the couch and get the whole family active.

The POST Team has some top tips to help kick start your fun, fit, family summer: Put on reins and walk your toddler to the park rather than taking the push chair, play running and chasing games - use a ball or hula-hoop to make it more fun, try a family swim session on a rainy day, switch off the TV or computer, stick on some music and have a family dance-off, find out about activities planned for your local area and go on a family bike ride.

The POST service recommends one hour of activity a day, no more than two hours of screen time a day and reducing high energy foods and drinks.
