a massive £2 million “thank-you” has gone out to the people of Forfar and district for their magnificent support in helping the fight against cancer.

Volunteers and staff at the Cancer Research Shop in Castle Street were in celebratory mood on Monday when they announced that, since opening in october 1988, the magnificent sum of £2 million has been raised.

The shear scale of the donations and the support from the local community was praised by assistant manageress Shona Scotland.

She said: “We reached the £1 million mark seven years ago and, since then, people have continued to donate items to the shop.

“We say a huge “thank-you” to all our customers and volunteers. This year the Kirriemuir Relay for Life resulted in some 3,500 bags of items being donated. These bags not only helped the teams raise funds for the relay, but provided valuable donations for Cancer Research UK.”

The staff are delighted that, in the current economic climate, people continue to donate items they no longer require, from clothes and books to household items and shoes. The stock operates on a two week rotation, after which items are bagged up and moved on to another Cancer Research UK shop.
