THE Gairie Works site has emerged as the front-runner in the bid to obtain the planning green light for a new supermarket location within Kirriemuir.
Proposals by three different developers are set to go before a special meeting of Angus Council in the town on Monday evening of next week.
However, detailed reports on the trio of applications have been posted on the Angus Council website ahead of the meeting at Webster's High School, with local authority officials recommending conditional approval of the proposal forwarded by CWP Property Development at the Gairie Works, close to Kirriemuir town centre.
The same officials are recommending that the Guild Homes (Tayside) Limited plans for land at Pathhead Farm and the proposal by Muirhead Estates Limited and MacDonald Estates plc for land at East Muirhead of Logie, be turned down.
However, these are only recommendations at this stage - and all three applications are sure to be given careful consideration when they come under the spotlight at the special meeting next Monday evening.
The plan for the Gairie Works is to demolish the existing buildings on a 1.5 hectare site to form a food store and car park, together with associated works.
The Guild Homes proposal is to develop a 2.7 hectare site on land at Pathhead Farm, to create a supermarket with associated parking, while Muirhead Estates/MacDonald Estates are bidding for the go ahead to erect a supermarket together with business, industrial and warehouse units, access roads, coach/bus/car parking, landscaping and servicing on agricultural land at East Muirhead of Logie, west of Maryton.
The local authority decided that the best way forward would be for all three applications to be considered at the one special meeting.
The plan of action for Monday, February 22, at Webster's High School, is for a pre-determination hearing will be held from 6 pm.
This is the process under new planning legislation which gives applicants, supporters and objectors the opportunity to address the council.
If time permits the council will then go on to determine the applications.
However if additional time is required the council will re-convene at 6 pm on Wednesday, February 24 at Webster's High School.
The supermarket plans are major applications and what is decided at next week's meeting will, no doubt, have major implications on how Kirriemuir is shaped in future years.
Indeed, such is the interest in the proposals, there could well be quite a turn-out at Webster's High School next Monday evening.
