FORFAR'S Kerr Drummond won the silver medal in Sunday's final of the World Junior Curling Championships in Flims, Switzerland.
Team Fraser, comprising Drummond, skip Ally Fraser (Inverness), Scott Andrews (Ayr) and Steven Mitchell (Perth), lost out on gold in a final that went all the way to the last stone.

A weighted attempt by Fraser to remove two frozen Swiss stones sitting on the button which jammed, giving Switzerland the one shot steal needed for their seven-six win and the world title.

"We were in control of the game throughout," said Drummond afterwards.
"The Switzerland skip played a good shot and it was tough for us to get the one we needed. Unfortunately it didn't come off."

Team Fraser had enjoyed an outstanding week with nine wins in a row, including defeats of Switzerland and Canada in the round-robin stages.
"After our first game of the round-robin, which wasn't up to scratch, things went upwards and onwards," said Drummond. "We won nine games in a row to get to the final.

"The standard was unbelievably high and you have to perform well in very game you play in. It's been a hard week for us and to come home with a silver medal is a great achievement.

"Our goal before the weekend was to get a play off and after that anything is a bonus. So to get a silver is a big bonus.

"We beat Switzerland in the round-robin and felt we should have beaten them in the final. Beating Canada was good and that was the game we really wanted to win."

Drummond is supported by the National Academy, which has been created to identify and build a wider base of potential curlers capable of challenging for a place in the Elite Squad.

The Tayside & Fife Institute of Sport, part of the sportscotland institute of sport's regional network, provides integrated support in the form of high performance expertise.

"Its expert teams work together to support Scottish governing body-identified athletes, delivering essential support services locally in sports medicine, sports science, strength and conditioning, and career and lifestyle guidance.

The World Championships marks the end of the 2009-2010 season.
Next year's event will be staged in Scotland and, naturally, Drummond hopes to be in the home team.

"Being on home soil with home crowds will be brilliant," said Drummond. "We know we can beat these teams and the teams we played over the past week will, no doubt, be there."
