Visitors from Arbroath for Strathmore Speakers’ Club
PRESIDENT Bill Walker welcomed a gathering of 25 to the Strathmore Speakers’ Club’s meeting last week.
This included the Northern District president of the Association, Lis Hill, and five other members of the Arbroath Speakers’ Club who were making an official visit.
David Binnie chaired the training session assisted by Helen Gordon-Wilson as timekeeper for the evening. There were three prepared speeches.
First to speak was David Binnie who was making his ‘masterpiece’ speech in order to gain his Certificate of Achievement. David reflected on the seven ages of man, peppering his speech with quotations from Shakespeare and demonstrating from his own experience the good life most of today’s older generation have seen, with so much still to enjoy.
Lis Hill and Iain Orr awarded a pass.
Next to the lectern was Mark Masson with his speech entitled ‘An Enthusiastic No’. This was a warning to beware of being caught by enthusiasts who persuade you to join in their particular pastime – in his case hillwalking. He was also awarded a pass.
Third up was Bob Stewart whom David was proud to introduce as this year’s president of the Robert Burns World Federation. Bob gave an ‘audience rapport’ speech that he had previously made in September when he had unveiled the new plaque erected at Hillside, Montrose by the Glenbervie Burns Memorial Association.
Bob’s speech unravelled some of the mysteries surrounding the original plaque put up by four men of Hillside, Montrose, dedicated to the memory of Robert Burns who stopped there during his Highland Tour of 1787. He was also awarded a pass.
The topics session was chaired by Graham Carr of Alyth who invited six members to speak for three minutes each at short notice on the theme of music.
Bill Walker blew them away with ‘Brass Bands’, Sharon Cumming strummed along with ‘Guitar Soloists’, Jim Smith marched off with the ‘Pipes and Drums’, John Winterton enthused over ‘Piano Recitals’, Hannah Williams pounded out some ‘Percussion Performances’ and David Howat rounded up the ‘Symphony Orchestra’.
General evaluator Jim Christie said it had been an excellent evening, which highlighted the value of inter-club visits, especially for newer members.
