SEASONAL PRODUCE AT FARMERS MARKET

STALLHOLDERS from the Angus Farmers Market are looking forward to the May market in the Myre Park, Forfar this weekend as new produce comes into season.

Sandy from Milton Haugh will have delicious local asparagus and seasonal vegetables, making a perfect accompaniment to his corn fed, free range chickens.

Sandy will also have the first of the local strawberries at the market, a welcome addition making us all feel that summer is just around the corner.

Antonia from Myreside Organics will be back for her first market of 2010.

Myreside Organics is a small market garden outside Meigle and produces fresh locally grown organic vegetables, all certified by the Soil Association.

Specialities this month will be purple sprouting broccoli, Swiss chard and salad bags. Antonia will also bring some courgette, cavalo nero kale and red and green lettuce in pots ready for your own gardens.

Many of the stallholders have won various food awards over the years and the latest achievement was from the Devenick Dairy.

Devenick picked up the award for the best product in the commitment to healthy eating category at the Grampian Food Forum innovation awards with their Very Low Fat Probiotic Yoghurt.

If you are having friends round for tea or you just fancy something delicious for yourself, the market has a lovely choice of cakes and biscuits.

Ann from T-Ann Cake has a wonderful variety of tempting goodies including banoffe pie cupcakes and a triple layered carrot cake. Ann also makes rhubarb crumble cakes and pear and frangipane tartlets, so good you want to take the credit yourself.

Irene Gow from Letham will be returning for her second Forfar market bringing with her a varied selection of confectionery and biscuits.

Irene has come up with an individual style of decorating her biscuits including some in the shapes of flowers, balloons and pretty cupcakes.

First class meat products are in abundance at the market and if you need to stock up the freezer now is the time to get your quality roasts and joints.

This is your chance to speak to the farmer that has personally reared the products you are eating. If you are unsure how to cook certain cuts they will be happy to give you the best of their knowledge and maybe even give you some crafty tips on how to get the most from your purchase.

There is a treat in store for dog lovers as Jess from the Dundee Dog training group will be bringing her performing dogs to the market.

Jess is a dog trainer and behaviourist in Angus and holds demonstrations with her dogs, trick training, agility and generally bringing a smile to everyone that watches them.

All in all a trip to the market on Saturday morning is the perfect way to start your weekend.

You can find the Angus Farmers market in the High Street, Montrose on the first Saturday and the Myre, Forfar on the second Saturday of the month from 9 am to 1 pm.
