Speakers Club members toast the bard

Strathmore Speakers Club held its annual Burns Supper at the Glenisla Golf Club last week, when club president Edwin Petrie welcomed over forty members and guests.

The evening got underway with the haggis being piped in by two young pipers, Ben Anderson and Bruce Pattullo, under the watchful eye of their teacher, Alfie Henderson.

Muriel Smith was ‘Poosie Nancy’ and the address was suitably administered by Jim Smith. Jim Gibb said Grace.

Ben and Bruce then entertained the audience with a fine medley of pipe music.

After an excellent meal the company was entertained by Davina Farquharson, who sang three Burns songs accompanied by Lyn Pattullo.

Club member Bob Stewart, who is the senior vice-president of the Robert Burns World Federation this year, then gave a very thoughtful and thought-provoking Immortal Memory to the Bard.

David Affleck proposed a most amusing toast to the Lassies, opening the door for a suitably robust response from Marion Wallace.

This was followed by Jim Smith giving his usual entertaining performance of ‘Tam O’ Shanter’ to the amusement of the audience.

After another delightful medley of songs was performed by Davina and Lyn, Bob Stewart recited some of the Bard’s works, at which point a strange figure, in the shape of Jim Smith dressed in nightgown and nightcap, joined the company and made his devotions in the form of ‘Holy Willie’s Prayer’.

Pamela Howat gave a generous vote of thanks for what had been a thoroughly enjoyable evening
