Conserving stones
The penultimate lecture in the 2011/2012 season of the Pictish Arts Society will be given at Pictavia, near Brechin, by Stephen Gordon on Friday, February 17.
Stephen is head of applied conservation within Historic Scotland’s Conservation Group and is based at the specialist facility at South Gyle in Edinburgh.
This unit specialises in all aspects of stone and paintings conservation.
He has over 35 years experience working as a stone conservator and a project manager in Scotland.
He heads a small team of conservators who are responsible for the conservation of monuments and artefacts throughout the country. He is a member of the National Committee for Carved Stones in Scotland and is an accredited member of the Institute for Conservation.
The theme of Stephen’s talk will be ‘The Conservation of Pictish Stones.’ He will start with a brief overview of caring for stones outdoors and go on to talk in more depth about the project at St. Vigean’s and finish with the Appie House Stone from Orkney recently discovered and consequently conserved by Historic Scotland.
