HEREFORD CATTLE TO TAKE CENTRE STAGE AT KIRRIE SHOW

FINGERS will be firmly crossed that there are no black clouds hovering over Kirriemuir this weekend.

Certainly committee members of Kirriemuir District Agricultural Association could well do without any repetition of the deluge that hit the area last year - resulting in the last-minute cancellation of the annual Kirrie Show after months of preparation.

Confident that lightning will not strike twice, plans are well in hand for a 2010 event that is sure to highlight all that is best in the world of agriculture locally.

And, quite a coup for Kirrie this year is the presence of the Hereford Cattle Society, which has chosen the venue for one of its three national shows of Hereford cattle.

All the top animals from across Scotland will be at Muirhead of Logie to compete for an array of prizes on the day.

The show's top award, the Centenary Silver Trophy will, this year, be awarded to the champion of champions in the horse sections.

In addition, exhibitors of horses will be eyeing a trio of new awards. The Brooks Trophy for the ridden Arab champion and the Lochlands Trophy for the overall working hunter champion, were introduced last year but, due to the event cancellation, have yet to be competed for.

The third award, the Jan Wilson Memorial Trophy, is to be a roving prize in horses, this year going to the leading entry in the ponies in hand and ridden category.

While the livestock judging will take centre stage on the morning of Saturday, July 17, there will be plenty of main-ring and other entertainment to keep all the family amused throughout the day.

There will be the usual array of trade and fund-raising stands, together with the produce, baking, handicrafts and floral art marquee and a display of vintage tractors and stationary engines.

In addition, there will be a large, interesting and varied craft fair and a companion dog show (pedigree & novelty classes), with entry on the field from 1.15 pm.

Topping the bill in the main ring will be James Dylan's International Motorcycle Stunt Show, while members of the Angus Pony Club will display their skills in the saddle with an array of pony club games.

Throw in some traditional Scottish music, Highland dancing, dry-stone dyking, sheep shearing demonstration, an RHET Angus Countryside Initiative, and musical cars and a tractor rebuild display by Angus Friends of Heritage and you have all the ingredients for a great family day out at Muirhead of Logie on the south-west outskirts of Kirriemuir this Saturday.

Admission is 7 for adults, 4 for senior citizens and 3 for children, with car parking free.
