Orchestra’s invitation to the dance

REHEARSALS are now underway for Tayside Symphony Orchestra’s first concert of 2013 which will take place on Saturday, February 2 in the Reid Hall, Forfar.

Taking the form of an “Invitation to the Dance”, the programme consists of well-known works by popular composers, with Weber providing the theme for the concert, and with Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Shostakovich and Strauss all contributing to what will surely be a memorable evening.

Diverse items including “Thunder and Lightning”, Polka, Jazz Suite, Polonaise from “Eugene Onegin” and the “Blue Danube” Waltz will be presented.

Conductor Ron Walker said: “Having put on a successful event especially for youth in February, we are now returning to entertainment which should appeal to all ages with music to suit all tastes.

“Traditionally this is the time for the New Year concert in Vienna and exciting performances by Andre Rieu and his Orchestra, so we would like to offer TSO’s own seasonal contribution, with our theme being different types of dance.

“Members of the audience should feel free to trip the light fantastic in the aisles - if there’s any space available!

“I say that because this concert tends to be particularly well attended so it might be an idea to get tickets early”

“Although our costs increase yearly, as this is a time of credit crunch, we have decided to hold ticket prices at the level of the past few years; children under 16, accompanied by adults, get a very good deal with entry for them being free.

“As usual we will run a bus from Montrose/Brechin to Forfar on the evening of the concert; details will be provided nearer the time.

“On behalf of the TSO committee and players, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our loyal supporters and generous sponsors a Happy Christmas and a successful new year.”

Tickets for the concert, which beings at 7.30 p.m. (doors open 6.45 p.m.), will be available in the New Year at TSO’s regular outlets at The Toy Castle, Castle Street, Forfar; Hogg’s, High Street, Montrose; any member of TSO/TSO committee or at the door on the evening of the concert.
