Literary festival

FANS of Victoria Hislop will be given the opportunity to meet the best-selling author when she makes a rare public appearance at the Dundee Literary Festival.

She will provide an exclusive insight into her work and literary life as well as reading extracts from her latest novel The Thread.

The book is set in Greece, as was her internationally bestselling debut novel The Island, which sold more than a million copies, held the number one slot in the paperback charts for eight consecutive weeks and sold over a million copies in the UK. It has been translated into 24 languages and has been a bestseller in many countries including Greece, Israel, Norway and China. Her second novel “The Return” was also a bestseller and has been published in more than a dozen languages.

This year’s literary festival, which begins on October 24, is the biggest in its five-year history and will see well-known figures from the worlds of fiction, poetry, journalism and the publishing industry take part in a series of workshops, talks, book signings and reading.

Alexander McCall Smith, one of the world’s most popular authors, will spend an hour in conversation with local novelist Jamie Jauncey as they discuss his latest titles and his favourite characters from Botswana, Edinburgh and Pimlico.

Crime writer Val McDermid, who has sold more than 10 million books worldwide and had her work translated into 30 languages, will form a darkly comic double act with the university’s forensic anthropologist Professor Sue Black.

Professor Black provides the expert advice McDermid needs to ensure the scientific accuracy of her work and the duo will discuss their working relationship and how they hope this collaboration may lead to exciting scientific discoveries.

The full programme can be found at literarydundee.co.uk and tickets are available by calling 01382 384413 or from the DCA in Dundee.

Events, unless otherwise stated, will take place at the Dalhousie Building, University of Dundee which is located on the main campus of the University, on the corner of Old Hawkhill and Hunter Street.
