Janet bowing out of SDT after 14 years
SPRING 2012 sees Scottish Dance Theatre’s final tour with Janet Smith as artistic director.
Premiering a new work, Pavlova’s Dogs by Rachel Lopez de la Nieta, alongside a programme of shorter works, the spring tour celebrates the diversity of work the company has produced with Janet at the helm.
After 14 years as SDT’s artistic director, Janet will take up the role of Principal at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds.
Under her tenure the company has grown from the small scale Dundee Rep Dance Company with five part time dancers and three full time staff into Scottish Dance Theatre; Scotland’s leading contemporary dance company which now employs nine full time dancers, two apprentices and ten office staff, presenting highly acclaimed work across the world.
Janet said: “I have spent 14 wonderful years with this pioneering, passionate and generous company. After the spring tour, SDT is heading off to performances in the UK, Italy, Germany and the US with new leadership on the horizon.
“Meanwhile I take my leave, to become Principal at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds. I’m taking a corner of Dundee with me, many friendships and a real appreciation of my time and involvement in the dance community and cultural life of Scotland. I wish the company great creativity, success and expanding horizons in the future.”
The Spring 2012 repertoire includes work that celebrates the talent Janet has encouraged within the company; All in the Grip by Natalie Trewinnard, A Touch of Red by Nicole Guarino and Love Games by Joan Clevillé.
Completing the Spring rep is Pavlova’s Dogs by Rachel Lopez de la Nieta which places the dancers on stage as test subjects, questioning how the audience view what they see on stage; Drift, an intensely physical piece by James Wilton; Lay Me Down Safe, a tender and sensual look at desire by Kate Weare and Idan Cohen’s animalistic My Sweet Little Fur.
As well as the usual programme of Open Studio and Meet the Creative’s events held at the company’s home, Dundee Rep Theatre, in April, SDT will premiere What on Earth!? it’s very first work for children at Dundee Rep Theatre’s Easter Children’s Festival. What on Earth!?, Janet Smith’s final work for SDT created with assistant director Sally Owen, combines dance, animation and music to create a nocturnal treat for all the family.
