FORFAR LIBRARY CORNER, JULY 16

WE all know how good we feel after a stroll in the countryside and how good for our health it is too.

But if you find yourself looking for a new place to explore or a different route to take locally, then call in to Forfar Library for some help.

The library stocks many books with details of local walks in Forfar, in Angus - the coast and the glens - or further afield in Tayside or the Grampians.

In these, you'll find interesting tracks like a three-mile route taking in the mysterious stones of Aberlemno or a four mile walk in Glen Prosen across the hills once trodden by Captain Scott.

For those after something more strenuous, numerous tracks through the glens are recorded and a number of books detail climbs in the area too.

And if you're after something further afield, some library staff members have taken the excellent "100 Walks in Scotland" and "Family Walks in Scotland" on holidays and enjoyed many of the routes written up in these.

Some of these books are small enough to fit comfortably in a walker's pack or in many the walks are laid out on the page for ease of photocopying.

There are two publications for sale that might interest walkers - Laurie Roger's "Walks into history: nine walks around the Forfar area" and the "Forfar Heritage Trail".

Also available are the heritage trails for each Angus burgh including the brand new Kirriemuir trail. The library also stocks the free Forfar Path Network leaflets and others such as the Eastern Cairngorms walking leaflets.

Ask staff members to show you these and the walking books when you're next passing by so that you can discover somewhere different to stroll.

Recommended read:

This month's recommended read was enjoyed by senior library assistant Aileen Rodger.

"Inside the Whale" by Jennie Rooney is a family story with deep secrets told by Stevie and Michael in alternating short chapters.

Recently widowed Stevie's story starts when her mother marries Reg but discovers, too late, that it's the wrong Reg.

Stevie's own first love breaks her heart but then as WWII breaks out she meets and falls in love with Jonathan.

Herein lies another tae. Meanwhile Michael, an old soldier, begins to share his memories of war and lost love with his young health care assistant Anna. Michael's story will change Stevie's past and alter Anna's future.

"Inside the Whale" is a compassionate first novel which has received much acclaim and was shortlisted for the Costa Book Award. If this sounds like an enjoyable read for you, just ask at the library counter.
