FORFAR LIBRARY CORNER, SEPTEMBER 17
ALONG with other full-time libraries in Angus, Forfar Library has recently become an accredited learndirect scotland branded learning centre.
The library joining over 500 other learning centres throughout Scotland in offering a selection of on-line courses known as Learning Bytes.
Learning Bytes is a range of over 650 on-line courses covering a wide range of interests and skills.
There is everything from short courses on subjects such as dealing with debt or using the internet to professional courses on business management or office software.
All courses are self-directed and completed on-line either in the library or at home.
The time commitment for each course is usually just a few hours in total, but all the information about each course is given up front before you start.
Courses are free and available to everyone. All you need to do is register and then choose your course!
"We're just starting on the road to offering on-line courses in Forfar Library and will be expanding what's available in the months to come," explained a library spokesperson. "To register as a learndirect scotland learner and see what is available from the 650 Learning Bytes courses we now have, call in to the library."
Fiction service: Each month Forfar Library produces posters with the "big name" novels that are yet to be published but, for which, the library has placed an order.
A new service is starting whereby you can take away the complete list of forthcoming fiction for all Angus libraries each month to browse at home at your leisure.
Decide which titles you'd like to request, then take back your list along with the original list for others to take home and use. Ask for the current list when you next visit.
Recommended read of the month: Kim Shepherd, Saturday assistant, recommends "Scarpetta" by Patricia Cornwell.
Kim thinks that this is possibly the best addition to the Kay Scarpetta series.
It continues the story of medical examiner Kay Scarpetta's life. She travels to New York, having been asked by the NYPD to examine an injured patient in a psychiatric ward who has specifically asked for her and refuses to speak until she is there to assess him.
The story he then tells is one of the most bizarre she has ever heard. He claims his injuries were obtained during the murder of a woman, which he did not commit.
The only thing known, for sure, is that the woman was brutally murdered and Scarpetta must find out why. This novel is particularly interesting and has a gripping storyline which made it hard to put down.
"Scarpetta" can be borrowed or requested from all Angus libraries.
