FORFAR LIBRARY CORNER, JUNE 18
THIS year's summer reading challenge for primary school children starts at Forfar Library on Thursday, July 2 and it's very excitingly called "Quest Seekers".
There are plenty of puzzles, quizzes, colouring-in, competitions and give-aways each week as well as loads of new books to choose from.
The bid is to try to beat last year's record of 3,715 books read by Forfar children during the summer holidays so if you've never tried the challenge before, make this year the one and lend a hand.
It's a great way to find you always have something to do during the holidays.
The BookStart Book Crawl for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers also starts at the same time and it's open to everyone who loves to share books with their child.
Collect certificates for each book you read and then pop along to the library's special Book Crawl party in August where the super big blue furry friend, Hamish the BookStart Bear, will be in attendance for everyone to meet. The Book Crawl is open to every child younger than school age.
Pop in to any Angus Library to find out more and register. Remember, it's all free!
Community groups:
It's a popular time of year for annual general meetings, so if you're a member of a local community group that has just had a change of committee, don't forget to pass on the new contact details.
"Bring us an updated flyer to file in our community information folders and we'll pass on details for the community information database," explains a library spokesperson.
"Together we can make sure everyone in Forfar can find the community groups they want to be involved with."
Recommended read:
This month's recommended read ties in with the banned books article in the current issue of "The Blurb", the Forfar Library newsletter.
If all you know of the infamous goings-on in Peyton Place, from watching the movie or the television series, take a look at the original novel on which those dramas were loosely based.
It's a far darker and more disturbing tale of small-town life than the American film and TV world was willing to deal with in the 1950s and 1960s.
Grace Metalious' novel is a surprisingly literate read in which she wasn't aiming to create a sensational and sexy book but rather an accurate, warts-and-all portrayal of the hypocrisies and cruelties repressed in a New England town.
Her novel considers difficult topics, some of which were completely taboo at the time she wrote, including child sexual abuse, alcoholism and murder.
However, there was little trace of these themes in the screen versions of "Peyton Place" with characters and entire families written out of the story.
Librarian Fiona Dakers says: "I was expecting a fun romp along the lines of "Valley of the Dolls", but what "Peyton Place" gives is a deeper and lingeringly sad story, especially since some of the more tragic incidents were inspired by a real life case in New England.
"It is a page-turner though, and even though I'm not a misery memoirs person I still found it an enjoyable holiday read."
"Peyton Place" remains one of the top-selling novels of all time. If you want to find out what really went on in Peyton Place, check the fiction section or ask library staff to help you find the book.
