FORFAR LIBRARY CORNER, AUGUST 20
IF you've had mixed feelings about "back to school" week, we have some books to help you get back into the groove.
For youngsters, a number of books in Forfar Library's parents' collection have starting school themes and, for older children, there are still plenty of school-set stories and series of books to remind you that school can be fun and exciting.
For parents, there are two new books:-
"How to Help Your Child Succeed at School" by Dominic Wyse (2007) is a practical, real-world guide helping parents help their children succeed at school. It advises parents and children of all ages on how they can best support their child through the education system, maximising their confidence, academic abilities and all-round success.
"How to Help Your Child Read and Write" also by Dominic Wyse (2007) advises on the best ways to help your child make their first steps on the road to literacy.
Both these books are available in the adult non-fiction section of the library.
A Curriculum for Excellence places more emphasis on children independently searching for information and again Forfar Library can help with this.
There is a homework collection of books about topics that Forfar cluster primary schools have said they study and these are all available for a three-day loan.
Topics range from Victorians to road safety to electricity to Japan. The library has also included a folder with recommended websites for difficult-to-find topics for children such as agriculture in Scotland and the River Tay. They are all kept together in the junior non-fiction section and there's a list of what's in the collection.
As a library member, you also have free access to the excellent "Encyclopedia Britannica" on-line, using your library card number.
This is an easy-to-use source of accurate information on just about every topic imaginable and the junior and student editions both have information written at just the write level for all ages of children.
No more translating adult information into a language your child can understand! Ask how you can access these anytime on-line in the library or from home.
Finally, if you're tired of the student in your house wasting time searching for information on the internet and not finding anything they can use, then sign up for a special one-hour class on "Quick and Easy Internet Searching for Primary School Projects" to be held in the library in September. Check the library noticeboards next month for details.
Recommended read:
This month's recommended read is from library assistant Jane Norrie.
Jane's best read of the summer was Jane Green's new novel "Girl Friday".
"Girl Friday" is a captivating tale of friendship, family and marriage.
In the idyllic Connecticut town of Highfield, Kit and her friends deal with everyday dilemmas such as divorce, secrets and the banking crisis.
Jane says: "Jane Green writes the warm, wise story with humorous twists, which moved me from laughter to tears each time I picked it up. It's a light entertaining read perfect for this time of year."
"Girl Friday" is available from Forfar and all six other full-time Angus libraries.
