Captivating play

DUNDEE Rep Ensemble presents Further Than The Furthest Thing a powerfully gripping and visually captivating play by Zinnie Harris which runs from Tuesday, April 24 to Friday, May 4.

Set on a remote island and loosely based on true events, Dundee Rep’s Artistic Director James Brining directs his final production before taking up his new post at West Yorkshire Playhouse later this year.

Isolated from the world, life appears simple and pure for the islanders until a visitor arrives and past secrets threaten to destroy the calm.

When an apparently dormant volcano becomes active the residents are evacuated to England but they find it hard to settle and long for home.

As events unfold dark secrets are exposed and the tight knit community is manipulated for political and economic gain.

The truth slowly begins to unravel and life will never be the same again.

Neil Warmington’s spectacular set design will see the entire stage flooded with 29 thousand litres of water.

The actors will perform on platforms and the stage as the tide will go in an out during the performance.

First performed in 2000 Zinnie Harris draws on her family’s experience of living on Tristan da Cunha an island halfway between South Africa and South America.

Further Than The Furthest Thing won the Peggy Ramsay Award, The John Whiting Award, a Fringe First Award, was specially commended in the 2001 Susan Smith Blackburn Award and was nominated for the Evening Standard Most Promising Playwright.

Dundee Rep Ensemble actors Ann Louise Ross, Kevin Lennon, Robert Paterson and Kirsty McKay are joined by visiting actor Angus Peter Campbell in this emotional tale of tragedy, turmoil and love.
