THE Town Council has reached an agreement with Alex. Adamson & Son, the builders, about the contract for the Newmonthill housing development.

At a special meeting the council decided, by 10 votes to three, to accept an increase of three per cent over the original contract price.

TWENTY-TWO pupils of Forfar West and Wellbrae schools sail from the Clyde today on a 10 day educational cruise which will take them to Portugal and Holland. The Forfar party join 900 other children from 51 different schools in Scotland and Ireland aboard the P & O Cruise Ship “Uganda”.

UNLESS there is a diplomatic or military solution in the Falklands crisis in the next few weeks, forty pupils of Forfar Academy and Webster’s High School could have their summer cruise to the Baltic Sea cancelled. The pupils are due to sail from Dundee on June 23 and the ageing Uganda had planned to visit ports in Scandinavia and the Soviet Union. The cruise ship, however, was requesitioned by H.M. Government for service as a medical ship in connection with the Falklands Islands operation.

RESTORATION and repair work on the famous old organ of the East and Old Parish Church started in earnest last week.

It is being carried out under the watchful eye of Mr David Murray who recently retired from St Machar’s Cathedral, Aberdeen. He is a close friend of East and Old Parish Church organist Mr W. Bernard,

A local businessman is planning to establish Angus district’s first crematorium with the next year.

Outline planning permission has already been granted for a crematorium at a site at Douglasmuir, near Friockheim and an application for detailed planning permission is set to go before Angus planners in June.

A Forfar company has been sold for £11m. Negotiations on the shock takeover of Strathmore Mineral Water were finalised. Leeds-based Matthew Clark & Son Ltd, a subsidiary of Matthew Clark plc, has bought SMW’s business and assets. In turn the sellers, Glasgow drinks company Joseph Dunn (Bottlers) Ltd, have acquired a substantial minority holding in Matthew Clark plc.
