Another market day in Forfar
Angus farmers market will be back at the Myre this Saturday, with stallholders hopeful the weather will take a turn for the better and treat customers to a fine day for shopping.
One of the best seasonal vegetables available at the moment is the vitamin packed super food kale.
Kale not only tastes good but is easy to prepare and can be used just by chopping up and added to soups and stews or you can try it sautéed with chilli and garlic and served simply with pasta tossed in olive oil.
The advantages of eating foods rich in vitamin D has been reported recently and apparently the Scottish people can be low in this essential vitamin due to the lack of sunshine.
Fish and eggs are an easy way to top up your consumption and Arbroath fisheries bring a wonderful selection to the market.
This month you will find cod roe cooked and also smoked, mussels and langoustines, together with our favourite’s haddock, salmon and sea bass.
Valentine’s Day is fast approaching so to impress your special other half with a romantic meal for two there is plenty of choice for the budding chef from the quality meats, delicious seafood or tasty game. Storm Cakes can also tempt you with some sticky toffee pudding or banoffee pie.
The market also brings excellent non food items with farmyard crockery, wax teddies and jewellery.
Tom and Jean Walker from Handcrafted Herbals have many creams and lotions to help with various conditions; they also have shampoo for your dogs using Neem and tea tree oil helpful for dogs with sensitive skin.
To help keep warm this winter you can visit the stall of the Kirriemuir Briquette Company. Waste wood in the form of dried compressed sawdust has been turned into 100% renewable energy briquettes perfect for stoves, oven fires and barbecues.

Market organisers are also keen to encourage new stallholders to keep the market fresh and to give variety and choice to their customers.

The Angus Farmers market can be found in the High Street, Montrose on the first Saturday of the month and the Myre, Forfar on the second Saturday of the month from 9 am to 1 pm.
