Talking Newspaper call for volunteers

Angus Talking Newspaper Association, a charitable organisation run solely by volunteers, held its Annual General Meeting on May 25 in Forfar.

Each month volunteers meet in each of the Angus burghs and produce a CD containing excerpts from the local newspaper and these are distributed to blind and visually impaired people in the area.

Although the turn-out for the AGM was disappointing there was a lively discussion of the years activities and plans for the future.

The number of listeners has dropped significantly over the past ten years and although the reasons for this are not clear the association has taken steps to raise its profile by launching a simple but informative website and producing a leaflet.

The leaflet will soon be available in public places such as residential homes, doctors surgeries, access offices and libraries.

The meeting also considered the need to have more volunteers to record the material and technicians to process, duplicate and distribute it.

Anyone who would like to join a reading group or be involved in the technical side can find more details on the website www.angustalkingnews.co.uk or phone 01575 575912.

Office-bearers remained unchanged with Ian Scott staying on as chairman, Lorna Milne as treasurer, and Liz Mountford as secretary.

The association now meets quarterly in each of the Angus burghs in turn and the next meeting is in Montrose on August 24. Listeners and potential volunteers are very welcome to come along.

Next year the Association celebrates the 30th anniversary of its founding in Brechin in 1982 and hopes it can mark that milestone with a renewal and widening of its service to the blind and visually impaired in Angus.
