Benefits for small businesses

Angus South MSP Graeme Dey has welcomed statistics published in a parliamentary answer which show that 65% of small businesses in Angus are benefitting from the rates relief scheme introduced by the SNP Government.

The figures provided by Finance Secretary, and former North Tayside MSP, John Swinney, were in answer to a question put by a fellow SNP MSP. The percentage of companies receiving rates relief in Angus is greater than that of the national average, which stands at 57%.

Mr Dey commented: “Small businesses across Angus are the engine rooms of our local economy – they provide welcome jobs and ensure people spend their money in the county.

“The SNP Government right from the off in 2007 laid out its support for small businesses and backed it up with the popular rates relief scheme.

“I want to ensure that in towns such as Arbroath, Carnoustie and Kirriemuir, we have shops and businesses which are thriving.

“The small business bonus scheme we introduced means that many businesses pay either reduced rates or none at all – reducing the bureaucratic burden and giving them more leeway to be innovative and enterprising.

“Given the wider financial crisis which has taken hold over the last few years I am sure rates relief has helped many companies, even when faced with particularly difficult circumstances.”
