MR FORBES Whimster, retiring manager of the Forfar Branch of the Clydesdale Bank, was honoured by his customers at a function in the Royal Hotel on Tuesday of last week.

Presentations of a radiogram, golf bag and clubs and a cheque were made by Mr George Mackie, of Ballinshoe, who commented that the size of the company was a measure of the esteem with which Mr Whimster was regarded by his customers at the bank. George also thanked Mr Whimster’s wife for her services to the WRVS of which she was the County Organiser.

He is a member of the Forfar Golf Club, Forfar Historical Society, the Old Parish Church Choir and the Angus Choral Society.

The 68th annual open show staged by Forfar and District Cage Bird Society in St James’s Hall on Saturday was well patronised by bird fanciers and members of the general public.

However, because of the rising costs of bird seed and travel the total number of entries was somewhat lower than last year at 420.

One good thing to emerge from the show was the high standard of the entries in the novice Border section where many excellent birds were staged.

As in previous years, local fanciers were well to the fore when it came to trophy winning.

A. Patullo of Eassie had a particularly rewarding day, winning a total of five trophies, including the Jubilee Trophy for the best bird in show.

COUNCIL house rents in Angus are set to rise by an average of 99p per week from next spring.

The recommendation to the district council was made at Monday’s meeting of the housing committee, when it was agreed to utilise an estimated revenue balance of £573,281 to restrict rent increases.

Housing convener, Ian Hudghton said the 5.5% increase would not be applied uniformly.

The maximum annual increase which would be applied would be £100 for cottage-terraced houses, £80 for maisonettes and £60 for flats and tenements.

The councillor stressed that the weekly increase of 99p compared very favourably with the £2.34 rise in Dundee district.
