40 years ago

A page turner, which can be used by patients who are completely physically handicapped, was handed over by Forfar Rotary Club to Forfar Infirmary this week.

The gift was presented by club president Ken Garland and was accepted on behalf of the Angus Hospitals Board of Management by ex-provost C. W. Renilson, the county convener.

This year’s Carnival Weekend got off to a flying start with a spectacular ‘Wild West Show’ in the Myre.

This was the first of many new attractions in the programme including displays by the Royal Marine Commandoes, the Pipes and Drums of the King’s Own Scottish Borders, a Highland Gathering in the Reid Park, a boxing display, a clay pigeon shoot, junior Opportunity Knocks and a ‘Country Cratur Capers’ variety concert to bring the weekend to a close.

Mr Dave Nicol of Doldy, who lifted the Blackface title at the Royal Highland Showlast year, had to settle for second place this time around - beaten by brother Will Nicol.

Mr D. Nicol, Strathisla Farms, had entered a two-crop ewe by the name of Doldy Diana. Home-bred, she is by a £3,000 Woolford ram and her dam by a £2,000 Craighead of Banff tup.

The first Letham Dog Show, organised S.O.A.P.A Letham Branch at the village hall last weekend, was an unqualified success.

There was an entry of 64 animals, long, short, tall and tiny.

The judge was Mrs Edith Tavendale, Brechin, who also presented the prizes.

20 years ago

A Forfar family were guests of the Royals last week.

And their special day was made all the more memorable when the Duke of Edinburgh chatted to them.

Regional councillor Rod McFarlane, his wife Jessie and daughter Shona were invited to last Tuesday’s garden party at Holyroood.

FORFAR Police have made a splash for trouble-torn Romania.

Members of the community involvement section completed a sponsored swim.

They had badgered family, friends and colleagues to support the fundraiser.
