Delving back in time
This weeks trip down memory lane takes us back to 1946 and the 4th Forfar Scouts camp at Glenshee. ANGUS Strathspey and Reel Society held their fifth Fiddle Festival in the Town Hall, Kirriemuir, on Saturday.
There were 100 entrants, with competitors coming from as far afield as Northumberland in the south and Ross-shire in the north.
Among the local winners was 21-year-old Mr Frank Robb from Lunanhead, who won the Alex Mitchell Trophy in the march, Strathspey and Reel championship.
William Todd of Lochside Farm, by Forfar, won the Clova Cup as the best competitor from the Angus Strathspey and Reel Society in the senior march, Strathspey and Reel competition.
The adjudicator, Mr James Hunter of the BBC was very impressed by the high standards of playing each year and said that the players were now realising that they were not just playing solo fiddle.
30 years ago
THE QUEEN Elizabeth Canteen has found a permanent home thanks to the Strathmore Vintage Vehicle Club.
The mobile canteen, commissioned during the war, is to be stored in a former garage in Manor Street, Forfar, which the club have bought as their headquarters.
The garage was recently vacated by Car Services of Forfar who have moved to another garage on Dundee Road.
The canteen was commissioned during the war for wartime relief work, particularly after raids and for military exercises.
20 years ago
FORFAR couple, Robert and Hilda Kidd, celebrate a marital milestone today (Wednesday) – their golden wedding anniversary.
The couple, who reside at Threewells Drive, Forfar, were married in Brechin on December 9, 1942.
Born in Montrose, Bob spent the first 17 years of his working life on the land., then 30 years with the Scottish Gas Board, retiring in 1975.
Hilda was born in Inverkeilor, and in her early years carried out domestic duties at Stracathro Hospital.
The couple have three daughters and a son as well as nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
To mark the golden occasion, a party for the couple was held by family and friends in Jarman’s Hotel on Saturday evening.
